Song ‘O The Month!

August 31, 2009

Fortune LoveSound

This month’s Song Of The Month goes to an electronica group out of France called Fortune!  The song I’m speaking of is their new single ‘Bully’ which was released this past month on US college radio.

I first heard this song on KALX in Berkeley, I believe it was.  Though, I was driving in my car and when the song was over, I had lost signal, so I never caught the name!  FORTUNE-ately, (yes, pun intended) about a week later I got a package in the mail from a PR company with a very persuasive letter inside and a promo cd with 2 tracks on it.  Though, I very rarely even take the time to listen to ‘singles’, this time I thought, ‘what the hell’!

Good thing I did…
I’m now the biggest Fortune fan west of the Mississippi River!

There are so many electronic-pop bands in the world right now, I could just scream.  But, Fortune has a quality, that I can’t quite seem to pinpoint, that makes them not only bearable, but enjoyable.

You can listen to their single ‘Bully’ from their myspace page (listed below) but also be sure to check out their new remix they did for the Phoenix song ‘1901’!!
To my knowledge, Fortune has yet to release a full length, but they now have 3 eps with remixes available.. and from my research over the past week or so, each one is well worth the investment!

Cheers to Fortune for creating ‘Bully’, LoveSound’s Song Of The Month!

Folks, This Is Folk

August 27, 2009

J Augustine Cover

When you listen to the first track, ‘American Mazy’, on Jacob Augustine’s new album ‘Harmonia’ you instantly fall in love.  Then, as you listen to track two, ‘Change’, you want to sit down with him and pick his brain.  Finally, by the time you finish the third song, ‘High Water’, Jacob Augustine becomes an instant celebrity.

Hailing from Portland, Maine, Jacob Augustine and his album ‘Harmonia’ doesn’t necessarily break any ground, set any standards, or even take folk music to a place it’s never been…….but there’s just something about it!  It could very well be his utterly intense vocals, or perhaps his better than great lyrics.

To put it plainly and simply, this record is beautiful, absolutely, undeniably beautiful!  I can’t put a number on the massive amount of records I’ve received in the mail this year, but I can say that this one has got to be tied for first in the ‘amount of play in my iTunes’ category.

As far as I can tell, Jacob is not playing live anywhere outside of Portland, ME in the near future.  But please, if you know what’s good for you, keep checking his myspace page for updated tour dates.  And you’ve gotta get your hands on ‘Harmonia’!

Do French Musicians Really Do This?

August 27, 2009

PollyannaLoveSound

Pollyanna is…..wait…..wait for it…..a French-Pop-Folk Duo….Hmmm…..
In all actuality, though, they are quite charming!

I was a bit skeptical at first, until I heard the track ‘Chocolate Jesus’, then I started viewing the album in a completely different light.
There’s nothing too complex or too eccentric about this record, which is titled ‘On Concrete’, but that’s a good thing in this situation.  The record is a mellow, moody, pure folk-pop album.  And I would not be taking the time to write about it if I didn’t feel like you should take the time to listen to it.

This record is not for everyone, but it is something unlike anything else you’ve heard before, in the mildest sense.
I can imagine spending an evening at a martini bar or coffee shop listening to these 2 play live for a couple of hours….  Actually, could we arrange this?

From Ireland, With (a lotta) Love!

August 27, 2009

ThePleaLoveSound

R&S Records out of Belgium is a very interesting, well put-together label.  Years ago they spawned Pinback as well as Aphex Twin, and who could forget Detroit-based Atkins from Model 500 (who is still with the label and going strong, mind you).

Well, more recently the label has started a new branch called Apollo Records (more indie than electronic).  If I were you, I’d be DYING to see what came out of this one!
If you are like me, you need not wait any longer….

I’m honored to introduce you to the Ireland-based rock band The Plea!!!

I know it’s only August, and there are a lot of releases left to come in 2009, but, thus far, The Plea’s brand new record ‘Modern Chaos’ wins the ‘Straight Up Rock ‘N Roll’ Album Of The Year here at LoveSound!!!

The songs are passionate and powerful…  They are what you would expect from an Irish rock band, only better, especially after you spin the record 2 or 3 times.  With their songs like ‘Hello’ & ‘Windchime’ you can certainly expect The Plea to become a household name in the US and around the world by the time their next album comes to pass!

LoveSound Rating – 8/10

Favorite Tracks – ‘Windchime’, ‘Hello’, & ‘Burn It Brightly’
